Don’t Let Foot or Ankle Pain Rule Your Life

I feel your pain. At least I used to.

My college sports career and basketball scholarship flamed out in a single moment when I ruptured an ankle ligament on the court. I was devastated, and I carried a constant reminder with me for 10 years—aching whenever I walked any distance and being unable to hike, run or play sports.

So I understand how difficult it is to give up activities you enjoy and how it feels when you’re unhappy with your treatment options.

But I discovered the answer. I met an osteopath who knew just how to adjust my feet and relieve the pain. After six adjustments I was 100% pain free and could run again.

This doctor was kind enough to take me under his wing. I shadowed him in his practice once a week for two years. I watched him adjust the delicate bones in the feet and ankles of his patients. I asked questions and absorbed his expertise.

This personalized master class went beyond what I learned about feet and ankles in

chiropractic training. And now I offer my patients the same treatment I experienced, a natural alternative to cortisone shots and surgery. Common sources of foot and ankle pain These are the disorders I see most often:

  • Neuroma - a fatty tumor with swelling on the nerve, usually between the toes, often caused by pointy, narrow and high-heeled shoes

  • Plantar fasciitis - a frequent cause of heel pain from inflammation of the tissue on the bottom of the foot

  • Bunion - a bony bulge at the base of the big toe where it attaches to the foot, hereditary but exacerbated by ill-fitting shoes

  • Arthritis - often from overuse of the joints, causing cartilage to wear away and bones to grind against one other

  • An old sprain or strain injury - chronic pain or periodic flare ups from aggravating a sensitive area

My alternative approach When someone comes to me complaining of foot or ankle pain, I start with a case history to find out exactly when, where and what happened to trigger the pain.

Then I conduct a functional foot disorder exam to determine the extent of range of motion loss and see which of the 26 foot and ankle bones are out of alignment. Typically, I find that two or three small bones are out of place, which throws off balance, mechanics and muscle tone.

When I adjust this complex area of the body, it’s like fine-tuning a piano. Subtlety and precision are important. Patients tell me the adjustment usually feels good, giving a sense of relief right away. Depending on how long the disorder has existed, it can take eight to 12 visits to get everything back in alignment.

Follow chiropractic with self care My recommendations to help reduce pain and speed healing:

  • Soaking - soak feet in hot water daily for 20 minutes with two cups of Epsom salts

  • Light stretching – I like the three simple, effective stretches in this Prevention article

  • Proper shoe wear - a lace-up shoe with a closed heel provides the most support and stability, stay way from shoes that are too narrow in the front

  • Limit your activities - avoid running, long hikes and sports such as tennis or racquetball that require jumping or quick sideways movement
