Chronic Back Pain – San Rafael Chiropractor on Prevention & Relief

Are you one of the 75% to 85% of Americans who experience back pain? According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, that’s how many of us will face back problems at some point in our lifetime.

In my San Rafael practice, it certainly holds true. Nearly three quarters of my patients come to me for relief from back pain. Whether it’s from a car accident, sports mishap, a fall or an injury during housecleaning or home maintenance, the result is nagging pain that demands way too much attention and energy. How to cope with and relieve chronic back pain:

  1. Chiropractic You might have predicted I’d say that, but my approach for patients suffering from back pain is multifaceted. First, I set the stage for maximum benefit from the chiropractic by using two other healing techniques. I start with muscle-relaxing massage and a rapid release vibrational treatment to promote a more limber spine and break down old scar tissue. Then, I make the adjustment to put your bones in alignment and continue to calm the spasming muscles. It’s a very effective combination. In general, my patients with chronic back problems see 60% improvement after 4 to 6 visits.

  2. Movement I send patients home with a 10-minute-a-day program of stretching exercises designed by the Texas Back Institute. The handout includes illustrations and instructions for movements aimed at increasing mobility and supporting your chiropractic visits. Light, low-impact exercise such as walking, water aerobics or swimming are also great ways to propel your recovery and reduce future discomfort.

  3. Prevention Once I know your particular back condition I can give you tailored preventive tips, but here are some good all-purpose ways to maintain a healthy back: - Stretching and exercise, as we are most vulnerable when our muscles are stiff and weak

- Supportive, well-fitting shoes to absorb shock that would otherwise radiate into the back - Careful lifting with bended knees, not using your back

Sitting – a big, bad back pain culprit Your spine naturally gets compressed when you sit for hours, and ultimately you pay for it with aches and pains. My recommendation: if you work at a desk (or drive) for long periods, set a reminder on your phone to get up and walk around for 10 minutes every two hours. Also, make sure you’re using an ergonomically correct chair and computer station to encourage good posture. And if you have a choice, a stand-up desk is really the way to go.
